This is the third book to the 39 Clues: Cahills vs Vespers series. Amy and Dan travel to Samarkand, Uzbekistan and follow the now dead Ulaug Beg in order to find the next ransoming secret for the Vespers. Now with Dan's best friend Atticus Roosenbloom and his older brother, Jake, on their side, the Cahills feel as they can find the next item in time to save their uncle, the chosen hostage to be shot. But Dan and Amy don't know exactly what they're looking for.

It has been a year since the Artemis Fowl Incident, abduction and ransom of LEP recon officer Holly Short, led by the notorious, brilliant, twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl the second. But there is new havoc in Haven City. Someone -a human- has been selling batteries to half-witted goblins with soft-nosed lasers, and Holly Short is on the case. Immediatly suspecting Artemis, Holly returns to Fowl Manor to consult and accuse Artemis. But Artemis has his own problems. An e-mail is sent to him from Russia, an e-mail featurng his dying father. He is sure a ransom will be sent soon. Now, for the first time, Artemis and the LEP must work together to prevent the Lower Elements and the human world from colliding, and to save Artemis' father. But these are uncharted waters, with unsuspecting enemies and traitors.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Eoin Colfer, like me, is an Irishman. He has a fresh mind that makes fairytale more than damsels being rescued by handsome princes. Artemis Fowl is a twelve-year-old Irish boy, yet the greatest, most brilliant criminal mastermind in the world. With the help of his bodygaurd/manservent, Butler, and Butler's younger teenage sister, Juliet, Artemis captures an elf of the Lower Elements, Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit. Artemis throws her in a cell of solid rock where she is held ransom for "fairy" gold. But does Artemis really know what he's dealing with? Artemis thinks that he's one step ahead in the game, but then these fairies stop playing by their own rules.

Amy and Dan Cahill are the decsendants of Madrigals. Cahills, the most powerful family in the world. Yet they believed that after the clue hunt for the secret to ultimate power, their lives would return to normal. How wrong they were. Vespers Rising kicks off a new part to the 39 Clues series, and Amy and Dan, believe it or not, are in more danger than before.
